About the Dictionary

Definitions, pronunciation, synonyms and antonyms for any English word. Each entry is grouped by part of speech, with examples where the source has them, and the audio button plays the word aloud. Synonyms and antonyms are clickable, so one lookup leads to the next - which is how you end up with the word you were actually reaching for.

What you get for each word

Definitions grouped by part of speech - noun, verb, adjective - with example sentences where they exist, the phonetic spelling and an audio pronunciation when one is available, and lists of synonyms and antonyms you can click to look up in turn. It is useful when writing, when a word in an article is unfamiliar, and when you want a more precise alternative to a word you have used too often.

Tips for better writing

  • Pick synonyms carefully - "big", "large" and "vast" are not interchangeable in every sentence.
  • Run the finished text through the grammar checker to catch spelling and punctuation.
  • Keep to a word limit with the word counter.

Definitions come from the free Wiktionary-based dictionary API and are looked up through our server, so your searches are not sent from your browser to a third party.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the definitions come from?+

From the free Dictionary API, which draws on Wiktionary. Coverage is good for ordinary vocabulary and thinner for technical terms, brand names and very new words.

Why is there no audio for some words?+

Because the source has no recording for it. The written pronunciation is still shown when one exists.

Does it cover other languages?+

English only at the moment.
