Adding Irish VAT
To add VAT to a net price, multiply it by one plus the rate. At Ireland's standard rate of 23%, €100 becomes €100 × 1.23 = €123, of which €23 is VAT. The calculator shows the three figures an invoice needs - net, VAT and gross.
Removing Irish VAT (reverse VAT)
To find the price before VAT, divide the gross price by 1.23 - do not take 23% off it. €123 including VAT is €123 ÷ 1.23 = €100. Taking 23% off €123 gives €94.71, which is wrong by more than five euros, and it is the most common VAT mistake there is. Choose “Remove VAT” above and the calculator divides correctly.
Ireland's reduced rates
Besides the 23% standard rate, Ireland has reduced rates of 13.5% and 9%, and a 0% rate, and which one applies depends on the goods or service. Those categories have changed in recent budgets, so check the rate for your product with Revenue, then type it into the rate box - the maths is the same at any rate.
