Adding VAT
To add VAT to a net price, multiply it by one plus the rate. At the UK standard rate of 20%, £100 becomes £100 × 1.2 = £120, of which £20 is VAT. The calculator does this for any rate and shows the three figures an invoice needs: net, VAT and gross.
Removing VAT (reverse VAT)
To find the price before VAT, divide the gross price by one plus the rate - do not subtract the percentage. £120 including 20% VAT is £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100. Taking 20% off £120 gives £96, which is wrong, and it is the most common VAT mistake there is. Choose “Remove VAT” above and the calculator divides correctly.
VAT rates in the UK and Europe
The country list carries the standard rate for the UK and every EU member state, plus Norway and Switzerland, as of October 2026 - including the recent increases in Finland (25.5%, from September 2024) and in Slovakia (23%), Estonia (24%) and Romania (21%) during 2025. Reduced rates vary by product in every country, so only the UK’s 5% and 0% rates are listed; for anything else, enter the rate yourself.
US sales tax
The US has no VAT. Sales tax is set by the state and often by the county and city too, so the rate depends on where the sale happens. Choose the custom rate and enter the combined rate for that location. The maths - add or remove - is the same.
