Photo sizes by country
- United States - 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25-35 mm) from chin to top of hair. The same size is used for US visas.
- United Kingdom - 35 × 45 mm, head 29-34 mm.
- EU and Schengen visas - 35 × 45 mm, head 32-36 mm.
- Canada - 50 × 70 mm, face 31-36 mm.
- Australia - 35 × 45 mm, head 32-36 mm.
The guide lines on the photo are drawn to these measurements. Zoom and drag until the top of the head touches the upper line and the chin sits in the green band. Output is 300 DPI, the resolution photo labs print at.
Getting the photo right
Most rejections are about the photo, not the crop: use a plain white or off-white background, even lighting with no shadows on the face or behind the head, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera, and no glasses. Ask someone else to take it from about four feet away at eye level - a selfie distorts the face. If the background is not plain, clean it up with the background remover first.
Printing
The 4 × 6 sheet fits as many copies as the size allows - six US photos, eight 35 × 45 mm ones, four Canadian ones - with grey cut lines. Print it as a standard 4 × 6 photo at any drugstore kiosk, Walgreens, CVS, Boots or online lab, at actual size with no “fit to page”. For a UK online passport application you need a digital photo rather than a print: download the single photo instead.
